Takotsubo syndrome, a stress-induced cardiomyopathy mimicking an acute coronary syndrome but formerly considered a benign reversible disease, increases the risk of heart failure and cardiac death. Here, the authors show that the function and structure of the heart engage in a continuous deterioration after acute stress and link this snowball effect to deviated control of cardiac metabolism.
