This dataset consists of a spreadsheet containing questionnaire data, and supplementary material including a blank questionnaire form, a self-assessment risk checking form and a score sheet for PrEP eligibility.

The study which generated this dataset analysed a cohort of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Mtwapa town, Kenya in order to assess the performance of Kenyan Ministry of Health criteria used to predict HIV-1 acquisition; to assess the cohorts’ eligibility to receive Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the prevention of HIV using either Ministry of Health Criteria or the authors’ Cohort-Derived HIV-1 Risk Score (CDHRS); and to identify factors associated with the uptake of PrEP for eligible MSM.

Study participants were recruited by 10-15 trained peer mobilizers who approached individuals, and eligibility was based on age (18–49 years) as well as any of the following: HIV-1-negative status; involvement with transactional sex work; having a recent sexually transmitted infection (STI); having multiple sexual partners; having sex with an HIV-1-infected partner; or anal sex during the 3 months before enrolment. The study took place at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) clinic, Mtwapa town.

During enrolment and monthly follow-up visits the researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with participants using a standardized behaviour questionnaire, provided HIV-1 testing and counselling using rapid point of care antibody tests, provided risk reduction counselling, assessed medical histories and performed physical examinations of the participants.

PrEP Eligibility and Uptake.csv: A spreadsheet consisting of data relating to 986 individuals including demographic information, behaviours, risk factors and uptake of PrEP. Variables include age ranges, sexual activity, drug use, marital status, employment and marital status. Participant responses have been generalised to preserve anonymity.

PSK-Prep-Self-RAST Revised.pdf: A one-page HIV Self Risk Checker published by the Kenyan Ministry of Health, including questions on condom use, intravenous drug use, sexually transmitted disease and previous use of PrEP.

PrEP Adherence 2017-9-4.docx: A blank questionnaire form used to assess the usage of PrEP and participants’ Motivation and Adherence when taking PrEP.

Additional file 1 - PrEP Eligibility Score Sheet.docx: A one-page scoresheet for PrEP eligibility which underpins the Cohort-Derived HIV-1 Risk Score tool (CDHRS) for men who have sex with men.

The .csv file can be opened using any spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. The .docx files can be opened using Microsoft Word or open source software such as Open Office. The .pdf can be opened using Adobe reader or a standard web browser.

The study received ethical approval from The KEMRI Ethics Review Committee (SSC 894) and all participants provided written informed consent.
